Friends and Mental Health (Part 1)

Hi everyone. Today, I’m going to tell you about how to talk to your friends about your mental health.

Research shows that having good friends in your life is beneficial to your mental health since your friends can help you with:

  • Finding your purpose in life.
  • Increase your happiness and decrease your stress and anxiety levels.
  • Increase your self-confidence and self-worth
  • Help you heal with certain traumas like a death in the family, fatal illness, etc.
  • Promote healthy habits such as having a healthy diet, etc.

There are times where a friendship may fade away due to certain things happening in your lives such as having kids, working, dealing with financial issues, etc. However, there are ways to make sure your friendship lasts for a long time. In order to nurture your friendships, you have to:

  • Show kindness and empathy. Your parents always told you to be kind to everyone and they were right. Showing knindess and empathy are true roots to having a successful friendship.
  • Listen to your friends. Pay attention to every detail to any information your friends are telling you when they are talking to you. Also, when your friends are telling you something negative about their lives, only provide advice when they ask for it.
  • Open yourself up to your friends. I will dive in more to this topic later, but telling your friends about what is going on in your life will increase your bond with your friends.
  • Earn your trust.  When your friend plans an event, make sure that you keep your promise and arrive on time. Also, when your friend tells you something private taht he/she don’t want anyone else to know, keep it to yourself.

In school, it is shown that you have to have a large group of friends. However, as you get older, you realize that friendships does not depends on how many you have. All that matters is the bonds, connection, and communication you have with each other.
